Can older Android 7.0 phones still install the latest Binance APP?

The minSdkVersion (minimum system version) of the Binance APP has gradually increased over the years, and the most pressing question for users with older phones is, "Can my Android 7 device install the new version?" This note outlines the current official support status for older systems and provides several alternative solutions. To download the new version, go to the Binance official website or the Binance Official APP; for iPhones, check the iOS Setup Tutorial.

Historical Changes in minSdkVersion

Minimum system requirements for the Binance APP by year:

Year minSdkVersion Corresponding Android Version
2018 21 Android 5.0 Lollipop
2020 23 Android 6.0 Marshmallow
2022 24 Android 7.0 Nougat
2024 26 Android 8.0 Oreo
2025 onwards 24 (A few compatible packages for lower versions) Android 7.0 Nougat

As you can see, the main version raised its minimum requirement to Android 8 starting in 2024, but Binance still provides a compatibility package for Android 7.

Installability on Android 7 Devices

Current options for Android 7 users:

  • Main version v2.100 series: Cannot be installed (minSdk=26)
  • Compatible version v2.100-compat: Installable (minSdk=24, streamlined features)
  • Older version v2.90 series: Installable (minSdk=24, original features)

Differences between the compatible version and the official version:

Module Official v2.100 Compatible v2.100-compat Older v2.90
Candlestick Charts Full Full Full
Spot Trading Full Full Full
Futures Trading Full Partial Partial
Launchpad Full Not supported Partial
Fiat P2P Full Full Full
Google Login Supported Supported Supported
Device Fingerprint New version New version Old version

The compatible version can meet the vast majority of daily usage needs.

Actual Performance

I tested this on an Android 7.0 Redmi Note 5 (4 GB RAM, Snapdragon 636):

  • Boot to home page: 8 seconds (Official version cannot be installed; this is the compatible version's performance)
  • Switch to market page: 3 seconds
  • Candlestick chart scrolling: Occasional frame drops
  • Spot order confirmation pop-up: 1 second
  • Returning to the APP after 5 minutes in the background: ~20% chance of being killed by the system

The experience is barely usable, with a noticeable gap compared to newer devices.

Performance on Android 8 / 9 Devices

If you have Android 8 or 9, you can install the latest main version, and the experience is significantly better than on Android 7:

  • Boot time: ~5 seconds
  • Candlestick chart scrolling: Smooth
  • Background retention rate: Higher
  • Push notification reliability: Close to that of new devices

Users with older phones should prioritize upgrading to Android 8 (if the phone manufacturer provided an OTA update).

What If You Can't Install the New Version?

If your Android 7 device cannot install the v2.100 main version and the compatible version lacks features, consider these options:

Solution 1: Install the older v2.90 version The "Historical Versions" page on the Binance official website retains several recent older APKs. Download v2.90 and install it directly. However, in the long run, older versions will stop working due to API protocol upgrades, likely lasting only another six to twelve months.

Solution 2: Use the PWA Web Version Open binance.com in a browser (Chrome, Firefox) and select "Add to Home screen" to use it as a PWA (Progressive Web App). Chrome on Android 7 still runs modern web standards, meaning you can access markets, place orders, and view candlestick charts via the PWA.

Solution 3: Access H5 directly via a browser If a PWA feels too much of a hassle, simply saving binance.com in your browser bookmarks is another viable approach.

Solution 4: Upgrade to a new phone If crypto trading is a high-frequency need, consider investing in a mid-range Android 11+ device (budget models work fine). The improvement in experience far outweighs the cost.

Security Risks of Older Phones

Continuing to use Android 7 entails some security considerations:

  • The system has stopped receiving official security patches from Google, leaving it vulnerable to known exploits.
  • Some root CA certificates are not updated on Android 7, which may cause SSL verification anomalies.
  • The WebView component is outdated and has poor support for the latest web standards.

Binance's built-in security mechanisms (certificate pinning, device fingerprinting) can mitigate some risks, but they cannot completely compensate for system-level vulnerabilities.

Will the minSdk Be Raised Again?

Referring to Google Play's mandatory requirement timeline:

  • Starting August 2024, new APPs must target targetSdk=34 (Android 14).
  • targetSdk and minSdk are two different concepts; the pace of raising minSdk is decided by the developers themselves.

Binance is expected to raise the minSdk to 28 (Android 9) around 2027, at which point Android 7 / 8 users will have to upgrade or switch phones.

FAQ

Q: Where can I download the Android 7 compatible version? A: Download it from the "Historical Versions" or "Compatible Version" entries on the Binance official website. The filename usually includes -compat.

Q: Can older APP versions still log in? A: Yes, the account is in the cloud. However, after an API protocol upgrade, the older version might suddenly fail to connect.

Q: Will there be problems installing Binance if I don't have Google Play Services? A: No. Binance pushes notifications via both GCM and its own proprietary channel. You can still receive push notifications without GMS.

Q: Do you recommend flashing a custom ROM to upgrade the Android version? A: The risk is high, and improper operation can brick your phone. Unless you are familiar with the ROM flashing community, it is not recommended.
