How to Allow Binance APK Through HarmonyOS 4 Pure Mode

Huawei's HarmonyOS 4 has "Pure Mode" enabled by default, which strictly blocks APKs originating outside the AppGallery. The official Binance APK is often stopped at the door by this layer on HarmonyOS phones. This note provides the complete steps to allow it through. Download the Binance APK via the Binance Official Website portal, or directly from the Binance Official APP; for iPhone installation, check the iOS Setup Guide.

What is Pure Mode?

Pure Mode is a security mechanism designed by Huawei to stop malicious APKs from running rampant:

  • By default, it only allows app installations from the Huawei AppGallery.
  • It pops up an "App not checked for safety" warning for APKs from other sources.
  • Some versions outright refuse the installation.

Binance is not listed in the Huawei AppGallery, so installing the Binance APK will inevitably be blocked by Pure Mode.

Steps to Allow on HarmonyOS 4

The full flow:

  1. Settings → Security → More Security Settings
  2. Find "Pure Mode"
  3. Tap to enter
  4. Check current status: "Pure Mode enabled"
  5. Select "Disable Pure Mode"
  6. The system will prompt: "After disabling, you will be able to install apps from outside the AppGallery"
  7. Tap "Disable" and complete identity verification (Password / Fingerprint / Face ID)
  8. Reinstall the Binance APK

Alternatively, a more refined method (Recommended):

  1. Do not disable Pure Mode.
  2. When double-clicking the APK, the "This app has not been checked for safety" prompt appears.
  3. Select "I confirm I trust this app".
  4. Enter your Huawei account password to confirm.
  5. This allows only this specific app to pass through.

The second method only allows Binance, while other APKs remain protected by Pure Mode, making it safer.

The Special Case of HarmonyOS NEXT

HarmonyOS NEXT, launched in 2024, is fundamentally different from previous HarmonyOS 1-4:

  • It removed the AOSP compatibility layer (no longer supports Android APKs).
  • It can only install native HarmonyOS .hap apps.
  • Binance has not released a native HarmonyOS version.

In other words, HarmonyOS NEXT users currently cannot install the Binance APP. Alternative solutions:

  • Use the browser (Huawei's built-in) to open binance.com.
  • Wait for Binance to release a native HarmonyOS version (no clear timeline).
  • Change phones or revert to older HarmonyOS 4.

Installation on Older Versions of HarmonyOS

Users of HarmonyOS 1.0, 2.0, 3.0:

  • These versions have better compatibility with APKs.
  • Pure Mode can be temporarily disabled.
  • The process of installing the Binance APK is basically identical to Android.

However, older HarmonyOS versions no longer receive security updates and are not recommended for continued use.

Secondary Blocking by App Guard

After disabling Pure Mode, HarmonyOS's "App Guard" might still perform a secondary block:

  • Settings → Security → App Guard → App Security Check → Disable
  • Alternatively, add Binance to the "Trusted Apps" whitelist.

Both steps combined ensure that Binance can be installed and run.

"Install Unknown Apps" Permission

Besides Pure Mode, HarmonyOS also has the "Install unknown apps" permission:

  1. Settings → Apps & services → App Management
  2. Top three-dot menu → Special app access
  3. "Install unknown apps"
  4. Select the browser you used to download (e.g., Huawei Browser, Chrome)
  5. "Allow"

This permission is a universal Android mechanism that HarmonyOS also retains.

Common Installation Failure Prompts

Prompt Cause
App not checked for safety, installation prohibited Pure Mode blocking
This app may pose a risk App Guard blocking
Unsafe app source Unknown sources unauthorized
Error parsing the package Corrupted APK file
This app is incompatible with your device Unsupported architecture

Handle accordingly based on the prompt.

Experience After Installation

Once successfully installed, the Binance experience on HarmonyOS:

  • Launch speed: On par with Android phones of the same tier.
  • Smoothness: Good (HarmonyOS scheduling is excellent).
  • Push notifications: Slightly weaker than Android (Huawei Push has its own channel, Binance may not be integrated).
  • Background keep-alive: Good (HarmonyOS is relatively lenient).
  • KYC selfie: Camera invoked normally.

The overall experience is usable, but push notifications might be slightly delayed.

Optimizing Push Notifications

Binance push notifications on HarmonyOS might be delayed. To fix this:

  1. Settings → Notifications → Find Binance
  2. Turn on "Allow notifications"
  3. Select "Gentle notifications" or "Banners" as the notification style
  4. Under "Battery", set Binance to "Unrestricted"

Combining these two steps significantly improves the delivery rate of push notifications.

Future Upgrades

When upgrading the Binance APK, HarmonyOS will run it through Pure Mode detection again:

  • If the older version was already allowed, the new version sometimes still prompts.
  • Solution: Confirm trust again.
  • Alternatively, add Binance to the trust list permanently.
