How to Enable Face ID Unlock for the Binance App on iPhone

Typing your password every time you open Binance on your iPhone is genuinely tedious. At the system level, Face ID and Touch ID provide comprehensive APIs for biometric authentication, which the Binance app fully supports. This guide explains how to enable it and where it can be applied. For full installation instructions, check the iOS Setup Guide; for browser access, go to the Binance Official Website; for Android, use the Binance Official App.

Where Biometrics are Applied in Binance

The Binance iOS client utilizes Face ID / Touch ID across multiple actions:

Action Uses Biometrics? Mandatory?
App Launch Optional No
Funding Password Optional No
Withdrawal Confirmation Optional (Highly Recommended) No
Transfer to Friends Optional No
Modify Security Settings Required Yes (If enabled)
Log in on New Device Not Used (Uses 2FA) No

Unlocking the app at launch is the most common use case, which we will focus on below.

Prerequisites

Before enabling, ensure that:

  • Your iPhone already has Face ID or Touch ID set up in the system settings.
  • Under System Settings → Face ID & Passcode → "Other Apps", the toggle is turned on for Binance.
  • Your Binance app is updated to a version from within the last year (v2.80+).

As long as these three conditions are met, you can enable it.

Steps to Enable

The full process:

  1. Open the Binance app and go to "Profile" (bottom right).
  2. Tap the gear icon at the top to enter Settings.
  3. Find "Security" → "Face/Touch ID Unlock".
  4. Toggle the switch to ON.
  5. The system will prompt "Binance would like to use Face ID" → Select "OK".
  6. Authenticate once with your face or fingerprint.
  7. A success message will appear.

From then on, every time you launch the app, it will first request Face ID authentication. After 3 failed attempts, it will ask for your app passcode.

Related Granular Settings

Once enabled, additional toggles usually appear in the "Face/Touch ID Unlock" menu:

  • "Verify on App Launch": Authenticates on every cold start of the app.
  • "Verify when App returns to foreground": Authenticates when returning to the app from the background (stricter).
  • "Verify before Withdrawal": Requires Face ID before initiating a withdrawal.
  • "Replace Funding Password": Face ID can be used in place of the funding password.

Enable these as needed. The most secure combination is "Verify on App Launch + Verify before Withdrawal".

Face ID / Touch ID Security Model

Biometrics on iOS are designed so that:

  • Biometric data is stored in the Secure Enclave (a dedicated security chip).
  • Apps can only query for a "Pass / Fail" result; they cannot access the raw biometric data.
  • Multiple failed attempts automatically fall back to the passcode.
  • A system restart or extended period without unlocking mandates the passcode.

Therefore, even if the Binance app itself had a vulnerability, it could never steal your facial data.

Disabling and Re-enabling

To disable:

  1. Navigate to the same path in the app and toggle the switch off.
  2. A prompt says "Face ID will no longer be used if disabled" → Confirm.
  3. The change takes effect immediately.

The steps to re-enable are identical. Toggling it frequently will not trigger risk controls.

Interaction with Apple Watch Unlock

When wearing a mask, Face ID may fail, and the Apple Watch can usually take over to unlock your iPhone. However, the Binance app by default does not accept Apple Watch unlock results. It requires a direct Face ID pass or the passcode.

The reason is that financial apps have stricter biometric requirements, and the Apple Watch's proximity sensor could potentially be bypassed. This is an intentional design choice.

Behavior When Switching Multiple Accounts

When switching between different Binance accounts on the same iOS device:

  • The Face ID unlock configuration is at the device level and shared across all accounts.
  • However, the "Funding Password" for each account is separate.
  • Face ID remains active after switching accounts.

You will not be asked to set up Face ID again just because you switched accounts.

Common Issues and Solutions

Issue 1: Cannot find "Face/Touch ID Unlock" in Settings Cause: The app version is too old or Face ID is not set up on the system. Solution: Update the app and set up your facial data in iOS System Settings.

Issue 2: Still prompted for a password after enabling Cause: You logged out of the app, or the system was restarted. Solution: Log in manually once; Face ID will take over afterward.

Issue 3: Locked out after 3 failed verifications Cause: Consecutive failures triggered a security downgrade. Solution: Enter your app passcode to unlock, then re-enable Face ID.

Issue 4: Stopped working after an iOS update Cause: Face ID data is occasionally cleared after a system reboot. Solution: Re-enable it once inside the app.

Issue 5: Still asked for 2FA during withdrawal despite Face ID Cause: Binance requires two-factor authentication for large withdrawals; Face ID cannot replace 2FA. Solution: Simply enter your 2FA code normally.

Compatibility with Touch ID Devices

Older iPhones with a Home button (SE / 8 series) only have Touch ID. Binance supports this as well. The setup path is identical to Face ID, though the menu text differs slightly.

FAQ

Q: Can I still use the app if I forget my password after enabling Face ID? A: You can enter the app using Face ID, but modifying security settings still requires the password. It is recommended to save your password in a password manager.

Q: Can an identical twin unlock my Binance? A: In theory, Face ID can misidentify highly similar family members. For financial apps, setting up a funding password as a secondary lock is still recommended.

Q: Will I be forced to unlock via Face ID if my phone is stolen? A: In iOS, pressing and holding the Volume + Power buttons for 5 seconds will immediately disable Face ID. Use this when under threat.

Q: Can it unlock while wearing a mask? A: iPhone 12 and later running iOS 15.4+ support Face ID with a mask.
