Is It Normal for Binance iOS to Take Up 800MB? Cache Clearing Guide

"When I just installed Binance, it was only 220 MB. Now, after three months of use, it's 800 MB. Is this a bug?" This is a common question among iOS users regarding the client's storage footprint. This guide explains what takes up that space and how to clear it. To download the latest version, you can follow the iOS Setup Guide, or open the Binance Official Website for instructions; for Android installation, use the Binance Official App.

Storage Footprint Breakdown

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → find Binance, and you will see a few figures:

Item Typical Size Description
App Size 220-280 MB The app installation package itself
Documents & Data 100-600 MB Cache and local data
Total 320-880 MB The sum of the two

"Documents & Data" is the part that continually grows, consisting mainly of several types of files.

Breakdown of Documents and Data

Within "Documents & Data", the Binance app typically stores:

  • Candlestick History Cache: Local cache of candlestick data for visited coins across different timeframes, about 1-3 MB per coin.
  • Market Icon Cache: Logo images for all coins, roughly 30-50 MB in total.
  • WebView Cache: Cache for in-app web pages (campaign pages, educational content), which can reach hundreds of MBs.
  • Customer Support Chat Logs: Historical chats with official support, including attached images.
  • User Avatars & Message Cache: A small amount.

Among these, the WebView cache grows the fastest; a long-term account can easily accumulate hundreds of megabytes.

Built-in Cleanup Method

The Binance app comes with a built-in cache clearing option:

  1. Inside the App → Profile (bottom right) → Gear icon for Settings (top right).
  2. Scroll down to "About / General" → "Clear Cache".
  3. Confirm on the pop-up → Space released.

This step will clear candlestick caches, icon caches, and WebView caches, while preserving your login state and local settings. It typically frees up 100-300 MB.

Deep Cleanup via Reinstallation

If the built-in cleanup is not enough, the most thorough method is a complete reinstall:

  1. Long-press the Binance icon on your home screen → Remove App → Delete App.
  2. Open the App Store and download it again.
  3. Launch the app and log back in.

Deleting the app wipes all local data, including cookies and Face ID preferences. However, your account, assets, and KYC are all stored on the server, so you won't lose anything upon relogging in.

Freed space: About 600-700 MB, returning it to its freshly installed state.

Offline Cache and Login State

The Binance app does not "break without a cache". Even if you clear everything:

  • It will fetch market data again upon launch (as long as you have internet).
  • The login state relies on the iOS Keychain, not the cache (you won't be logged out).
  • Candlestick charts will load slightly slower the first time, finishing in seconds.

So feel free to clear it; the impact on the user experience is minimal.

Settings to Prevent Cache Bloat

Some versions of the Binance app offer a cache limit setting:

  • Inside the App → Settings → Advanced → Cache Size Limit.
  • Options: 100 MB / 200 MB / 500 MB / Unlimited.

Once a limit is set, the system will automatically purge older cache files. A 200 MB limit is recommended for beginners, which is plenty for daily use.

The iOS System "Offload App" Option

iOS includes an "Offload App" feature, which is different from "Delete App":

Action Deletes App File Deletes Data Keeps Icon
Offload Yes No Yes (with cloud icon)
Delete Yes Yes No

"Offload" is suitable when you won't use the app for a short time but dread the hassle of redownloading. Tapping the icon triggers an automatic reinstall.

However, for an app like Binance where data is entirely cloud-based, "Offloading" doesn't make much sense. Directly "Deleting" is much cleaner.

Auto-Offloading Unused Apps in iOS 16+

The iOS System Settings has an "Offload Unused Apps" toggle, which is off by default. When enabled, the system automatically offloads rarely used apps when storage is low. While this has little negative impact on a cloud-data app like Binance, you might find it offloaded right when you need it. Manual management is recommended.

Do Multiple Accounts Share the Cache?

When switching between multiple Binance accounts on the same iOS device, the cache is shared (they reside in the same app sandbox). This means:

  • Candlesticks viewed by Account A will load instantly for Account B via cache.
  • Search history from Account A may be visible to Account B.
  • Logging out does not clear the cache.

If you are concerned about privacy overlaps when switching accounts, manually clear the cache before logging in.

"Documents & Data" in Apple System Reports

In iOS 16+, "Settings → General → iPhone Storage" breaks app data down into the "App Size" and "Documents & Data". For Binance, it is completely normal and expected for "Documents & Data" to grow larger than the app itself.

FAQ

Q: Will clearing the cache wipe out my favorite coin list? A: No. Your favorites list is bound to your account in the cloud and has nothing to do with the local cache.

Q: Will clearing the cache trigger risk controls and force me to log in again? A: No. Your login state is saved in the iOS Keychain, not in the cache directory.

Q: Does iCloud backup include the Binance cache? A: By default, no. Binance has declared the ExcludeFromBackup flag.

Q: How often should I clear the cache? A: Once a month, or whenever it exceeds 500 MB.
